How waist-to-hip ratio is calculated
Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is simply waist circumference divided by hip circumference. Measure your waist at the narrowest point between your ribs and hips, and your hips at the widest point across your buttocks. The World Health Organization uses WHR thresholds to classify cardiovascular risk: for women, below 0.80 is low risk, 0.80–0.85 is moderate, and above 0.85 is high; for men, below 0.90 is low, 0.90–0.95 is moderate, and above 0.95 is high. All calculations run in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
WHR is a stronger predictor of cardiovascular and metabolic risk than BMI alone because it reflects abdominal fat distribution rather than total body mass. Central obesity, indicated by a high WHR, is associated with increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension.
FAQ
Where do I measure my waist? Measure at the narrowest point of your torso, usually just above the belly button. Breathe out gently before measuring.
Where do I measure my hips? Measure at the widest point of your hips and buttocks, usually about 8–9 inches below your waist.
Does unit choice matter? No — the ratio is dimensionless. Whether you use centimetres or inches, the result is identical as long as both measurements use the same unit.
Is my data stored? No. All calculation happens client-side in JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded or logged.
