How blood glucose units work
Blood sugar is measured in two main units depending on your country. The United States and many other countries use mg/dL (milligrams per decilitre), while the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and most of Europe use mmol/L (millimoles per litre). The conversion factor is 18.0182, so mg/dL ÷ 18.0182 = mmol/L and mmol/L × 18.0182 = mg/dL.
What is a normal fasting blood glucose level? According to the American Diabetes Association, a normal fasting level is 70–99 mg/dL (3.9–5.5 mmol/L). A reading of 100–125 mg/dL (5.6–6.9 mmol/L) indicates prediabetes, and 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or above on two separate tests indicates diabetes.
