Ideal Weight Calculator
Estimate ideal body weight from height and sex using four clinical formulas.
Ideal weight formulas are clinical estimation tools developed in the 1960s–80s and do not account for muscle mass, bone density, or individual health context. Not medical advice.
Four ideal weight formulas explained
This calculator applies four widely cited ideal body weight (IBW) equations, all based on height above 5 feet (60 inches). The Devine formula (1974) was originally developed for drug-dosing in men. Robinson (1983) and Miller (1983) are modifications that tend to produce slightly different estimates, while the Hamwi formula (1964) is commonly used in clinical nutrition. Showing all four together gives a range rather than a single deceptively precise number. Results are in kilograms; the table also shows pounds for reference.
These formulas were derived from population studies and do not distinguish between fat mass and lean mass. A person with high muscle mass may sit above the "ideal" range and still be in excellent health. Use the range as a general reference, not a target.
FAQ
Which formula is most accurate? No single formula is universally best. The range across the four gives a more useful picture than picking one.
What if my weight is outside the range? The range is a statistical reference, not a clinical verdict. Speak with a healthcare professional for a personalised assessment that considers body composition, muscle mass, and health history.
