How steps are converted to distance
Distance is calculated by multiplying your step count by your stride length. Stride length is the distance covered in a single step. A common estimate is roughly 41.5% of your height: for example, a person 170 cm tall has an average stride of about 70.5 cm. You can enter your height to have the stride field filled automatically, or type a known value directly. In metric mode the result is shown in kilometres; in imperial mode it is shown in miles. All calculations run in your browser and no data is sent to a server.
The calorie figure is a rough estimate based on approximately 0.04 kcal per step. Actual expenditure varies with body weight, pace, terrain, and fitness level. Use this number as a general guide rather than a precise measurement.
FAQ
What is a stride length? A stride is one full step — the distance from where one foot lands to where the same foot lands again. Average stride lengths vary by height, walking speed, and individual gait. The default estimate (41.5% of height) is a widely used approximation for a moderate walking pace.
How accurate is the calorie estimate? The 0.04 kcal per step figure is a population average for a person of average weight walking at a moderate pace. Heavier individuals burn more calories per step; lighter individuals burn fewer. For a more accurate estimate, use a dedicated metabolic calculator that accounts for your body weight and walking speed.
