How WPM and accuracy are calculated

Words-per-minute uses the standard convention where one word equals five characters, including spaces. We divide the number of correctly typed characters by five to get words, then scale by the elapsed time to a per-minute rate. Accuracy is simply the share of characters you typed that match the passage at the same position. Counting only correct characters means racing ahead and leaving typos behind will not inflate your score — clean, deliberate typing wins. Everything runs locally in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.

What is a good typing speed? Around 40 WPM is average for adults, 65–75 WPM is fast, and professional typists often exceed 100 WPM. Accuracy matters as much as raw speed.

How is one word defined? By the common standard of five characters, including spaces and punctuation, rather than counting actual dictionary words. This keeps scores comparable across different passages.
