How GPA is calculated
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. Each letter grade maps to a numeric value on a 4.0 scale — A and A+ are 4.0, A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, and so on down to F which is 0.0. The weighted GPA is the sum of (grade points times credit hours) divided by total credit hours, so a three-credit course counts more than a one-credit course. FAQ
What is the 4.0 scale? The standard American GPA scale goes from 0.0 (F) to 4.0 (A or A+). Most universities use this scale for transcripts and honor rolls.
Does a higher-credit course affect GPA more? Yes. A 4-credit A raises your GPA more than a 1-credit A because the weighting is proportional to credit hours.
What if I have an incomplete or pass/fail course? Leave those courses out, since they typically do not factor into GPA. Only include letter-graded courses.
