Everything is computed in your browser using the NOAA solar-position algorithm; no coordinates are ever sent anywhere.

The calculation accounts for atmospheric refraction and the apparent size of the sun, placing the sun’s centre about 0.833° below the horizon at sunrise and sunset — the same convention used by official almanacs. Near the poles the sun can stay up or down for the whole day, and the tool reports those polar-day and polar-night cases instead of an impossible time. Results are shown in your device’s local time.

FAQ

How accurate are the times? They are typically within a minute or two of published almanac values. Real sunrise can shift slightly with your altitude, local terrain and weather, which the model does not include.

What is solar noon? Solar noon is the moment the sun crosses your local meridian and is at its highest point in the sky — the midpoint between sunrise and sunset. It usually differs from clock noon because of your longitude within a time zone and the equation of time.

Why does it sometimes say polar day or polar night? Above the Arctic and below the Antarctic circles the sun can remain above the horizon for 24 hours (polar day / midnight sun) or never rise at all (polar night). In those cases there is no single sunrise or sunset, so the tool reports the condition instead.

Which time zone are the times in? They are converted to your device’s local time zone for display. The underlying calculation is done in UTC, so the same coordinates and date give the same result anywhere.
